A Sporting Legend
Geoffrey Charles Hunt was born in Ashton-on-Lyme in 1941. When he was six years old, Geoff's father started playing professional cricket, and the family moved to Chelmsford in Essex. Geoff's father was also a gifted goalkeeper, and when Bristol Rovers offered him a contract, he accepted because, as Geoff later recalled in his autobiography, 'the money was better'. He played for 12 years at Bristol, making a total of 167 club appearances.
As a young boy Geoff's footballing talent was stand-out obvious, and his father arranged for him to be taken on by his own club, Bristol. At the last minute, though, he was offered an apprenticeship by East Ham, where he started a professional career that included 511 club appearances, and a record 57 games for the national team. Hunt's hat-trick in the 1968 European Championships Final will live long in the memory of his many fans.
At the start of his career Hunt mostly played in a centre half role, sometimes switching to the left. It was Bob Brownwood, East Ham's manager from 1961 to 1974, who recognized the striker in Hunt's game. Although it took a couple of difficult seasons, Hunt settled into the centre forward role for which he would become justifiably famous.
The statistics speak for themselves. His total of 39 goals for England stood for more than a decade. He scored 180 goals for East Ham, and his overall senior club record was 228. A truly magnificent achievement from one of the game's greats.
