Portrait of a Star
Frankie Williams was raised in Manchester, where his family moved from his native Liverpool when he was 3 years old. At 16, he was selling vegetables in a local market, when his father told him about an audition for a boy band. He won a spot alongside Gary Moniker, Mark Milord, and Jason Strong. The band was called Boy Crew.
As a member of the band, now performing as Take This, Frankie helped them earn success, including three No. 1 albums. One of them, Superlative, sold over 2 million copies, making it the first album by a boy band to achieve platinum. But after five years, and still only 21, he left the band and went to live in America, first in New York, then Miami, and then Los Angeles, where he lives by the ocean with his wife and three children.
His first solo album, Love Thru Love (1997), got a lukewarm reception from critics. But his single from it, Stories, sold more than 600,000 copies and spent over three months in the Top 10. The following albums continued his winning streak: Baby You've Got Me (1998), Never Alone (2000), and Swinging (2001).
In 2003, Frankie reunited with his old band, and recorded the highly successful album Pilgrim, which sold as well as Superlative. But less than a year later, reports emerged that he would be leaving the band again, and soon after he left the band during their concert tour of Japan after an argument over money.
