Sunni Patel
Sunni Patel, a famous Indian environmentalist, writes about her experience of leaving schoolafter completing 10th grade: "In India poverty often forces children into labour to support their lovedones. After my older brother left for work, my sick mother needed backup, with three young childrenabout. Gender inequalities and child marriage are yet more setbacks that affect girls' education."
Despite the challenges, she always believed the future would present her with opportunities. In 2008, an out-of-the-blue encounter sparked her work in environmental conservation. Thisintroduced her to the significance of tree planting and protecting the natural resources of herregion. Determined to make a difference, Sunni set out on a mission to renew the 'green cover' ofJharkhand.
It wasn't smooth sailing for Sunni when she founded a women-led organisation dedicated toenvironmental preservation. An important milestone was winning support from the initially passivemale community, and together they ensured that both government officials and the oppositionsupported her tree-planting efforts. The next step was taking on the wood or timber sellers whothreatened the mission.
Sunni's fight wasn't just about planting trees; it was about giving power to the people. Whatstarted with just 11 members soon grew to 3,000 active participants. The numbers came as a bit ofa shock - a good one. Their mission? To plant trees, conserve water, promote organic farming, andespecially, uplift rural women. She believed in the strength of collective action and a united effort.
"Working locally can eventually give you international recognition", says Sunni, who was recentlyawarded India's national civilian honour for her work in the villages of Jharkhand. "Actually, yourinfluence starts to grow without you really noticing". Her co-activists have now nominated her for theSouth Asian Forest Champions Award. It will be well-deserved!
