Meet Leona Wilkinson
Do you water your flowers regularly, but they die anyway? Your problem has been solved. Leona Wilkinson has published a book called Gardening for Dummies.
I interviewed Leona, Lennie to her friends and family, at the Royal Ballet Studio in London. She is currently working on her new role in Swan Lake. “A lot of people seemed rather surprised when my book came out,” she says. “But ballet can be quite demanding and at 24, when I started getting more serious roles, I realised I needed something to get rid of the stress. I tried the usual things: drawing, pottery, knitting and then I remembered what my granddad once told me. He believed that flowers are our true friends in joy or sadness. And it works for me.”
Because her father was a journalist, the family moved a lot. When Leona was six years old, her parents decided to send her back to England. They wanted her to get a proper education and take ballet classes.
“I came to live with my grandparents. They had a beautiful house in Devon. It was surrounded by a big garden.” Leona’s grandfather was a keen gardener. “He taught me everything about various kinds of flowers, especially tulips – his favourites, but I’ve always liked roses best.”
Leona’s book on gardening has reached the best-seller list. At the age of 27, she is not only a successful ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet but also a successful author. Has Leona found a new hobby? Who knows?
