A passion for tennis
Paul Witt visited professional tennis player Clara Jacobs in her New York home to discuss her autobiography Back to Victory, which has just come out.
Paul: Your book is a very interesting read. What made you start writing in the first place?
Clara: Well I started a diary on my first trip abroad, when I left Belgium for America at the age of twelve. I like to write in my free time, my quiet time, when I’m away from the crowds and just with myself. I do have other interests, like art and music, which I’d like to take up one day.
Clara began playing tennis at the age of five, coached by her father, who was a journalist and knew nothing about tennis to start with. When Clara went to America, he soon joined her to become her coach full time. By the age of nineteen, Clara had won seven Grand Slams and was a multi-millionaire. She seemed unstoppable. But then she broke her legs in a car accident. Her recovery was a slow and painful process. Being the number one tennis player in the world, and then suddenly not being able to play at all, was very difficult for her. She fell out of the top fifty and it seemed she would retire at the age of twenty-one. But she is climbing up again and has reached number twenty-eight.
Clara: I just want to play tennis. And I’m determined to get back to the top. I know my life is very different from that of an average twenty-two year old, but I am very grateful that I can still do something I love.
