Adam Just – BRIT Award Winner
Thursday afternoon, San José, California. I enter the dressing room and see a crowd of people aged from 16 to 60, but it’s obvious who’s the star – the only teen in the room, Adam Just, the biggest teen star in the world, probably the biggest since Michael Jackson.
His music is West Coast hip hop fused with funk and neo soul. He says he listens to “rap, rock, R&B, punk, jazz, Canadian indie, country, pop, electronica, gospel. I’m a great fan of Kanye West and 50 Cent, and my idol, the father of West Coast hip hop, Dr Dre.” Adam’s single ‘Crazy’ is currently at No.1 in the US charts. But he was no overnight success. His first single, ‘Wild’, only reached number 20, and he didn’t hit the top of the charts until his third single, ‘Busted’.
He says it’s ‘a great honour’ to win a BRIT Award. He was nominated in three categories: Critics Choice, International Male Solo Artists and International Album. “I’m delighted I got it for the album. My music is more important than me.”
San José is a long way from the small town in Canada where his mother, Lola, had him when she was 18 and raised him alone. When he was 13, he entered local talent contests and she put videos of him on YouTube. And that’s how it all started.
