Speaker 1 I come from an extended family and the sort of place where everyone knows each other's business, but socially I was in a rut. Although I felt awkward at first, I soon got the hang of studying. And of course, it's where I met the love of my life and developed the skills that took me on to university and a whole new career. It was a good instinct to broaden my network.
Speaker 2 I'd worked hard towards the perfect retirement in the country, but I found myself staring at the same four walls and in retrospect, leaning rather heavily on my social circle. Getting to grips with the potter's wheel proved to be a completely novel experience, and most of all, a welcome change of scenery. Soon I began to sell my work at craft fairs and online and realized I had found employment I actually enjoyed.
Speaker 3 Now I finally got my PhD, I still can't believe it all started when Jen needed a lift and asked me to join her in a French class. The years have gone by, I've worked all over France in increasingly responsible jobs, found the time to write a dissertation and move my life in a completely new direction. Just goes to show you shouldn't ignore a good Samaritan impulse, I suppose.
Speaker 4 I wanted to ascertain whether I could acquire a new skill, and learning about IT seemed just the job. When I got to the class, my heart sank as everyone looked about 30 years younger than me. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained, I thought, and I got stuck into something that proved to be unlike anything I'd done before, and it's given me a welcome source of pocket money when neighbors have computer problems.
Speaker 5 As a young person, my social life was fantastic, but a series of unrewarding jobs had left me feeling curiously dissatisfied, and leaving home seemed just a dream. I'm indebted to the guy who suggested an accounting course. The very first class I met Darren, and we've been a couple ever since. Our dreams have really come true. We've been running a business for two years, and we're expecting a baby in June.
