Working with animals
I absolutely love animals and I’ve wanted to work with them ever since I can remember. When I leave school I’d love to go and study to be a vet, but I have to get the grades first. (0) In the meantime, I thought it would be good to get some experience. That’s why I decided to work as a volunteer helping animals at the local animal shelter. The shelter is a place for animals that have been abandoned or abused by their owners. Obviously, I’m not able to do anything during the week because of school, which basically just leaves me the weekends. I work every Sunday and the occasional Saturday if I’m needed. It’s an early start and I need to be there at six.
. However, it’s definitely worth it. When I get there I normally start off by feeding the animals. After that, it’s time to clean out the stables and change the horses’ hay before washing up the animals’ bowls before their next feed. I also usually get to take out the dogs for a walk.
. It’s good fun, though. We have all sorts of animals at the shelter. To begin with, there are all kinds of farm animals like horses, goats and even pigs, as well as ducks and geese. On top of that, you’ve got all the pets, which means cats, dogs, hamsters and so on.
. Last year, for instance, we had a young deer that had turned up in someone’s front yard. The occasional injured fox or rabbit also gets brought in from time to time. I feel an enormous sense of satisfaction with what I’m doing. I really believe that I’m helping to make a difference. I get a tremendous feeling when an animal makes a complete recovery or goes off to a new home with owners who will treat it properly. However, it can sometimes be a bit sad as well, because you can get quite close to the animals.
. In fact, the most difficult thing about the job is that you need to avoid getting involved emotionally. It can be very distressing when an animal gets brought in because it hasn’t been looked after properly. Sometimes it’s not the owner’s fault.
. But it’s particularly upsetting when an animal that has been deliberately mistreated comes to the shelter. Unfortunately, many people don’t think about how a pet is going to fit into their lifestyle. We’ve currently got a one-year-old sheepdog called Buster. His owners, a young married couple, bought him as a puppy.
. As a result,he ended up alone in the flat all day while they were at work. It just goes to show that you need to think carefully before you get a pet.
