You will hear two students talking about choosing extracurricular subjects.
For each question (14-19), choose the correct answer (A, B or C) from the list of subjects.
Mark A for Applied Arts
B for Biology
or C for Creative Writing.
You will hear the recording twice.
A: Hey, I see you've registered for three extracurriculars, Applied Arts, Biology, and Creative Writing. You know, you can take only one, right?
B: Hmm. Unless my timetable changes, I'll have only Applied Arts and Creative Writing to choose from. Mr. Jones shifted our football practice from Monday to Tuesday, so I'd miss every other Biology session. But we've asked him to reschedule that since many of us are considering Biology.
A: How many classes a week?
B: Well, Applied Arts is twice a month. Creative Writing meets every Monday with an extra Thursday, on and off, depending on project requirements. Biology is a university prep class, so I'd have to put in a lot of hours twice a week.
A: And what if you can't make it to classes?
B: Well, no leeway for Biology. Only doctor's notes in case you miss a class. Quite strict. The Applied Arts also organizes gallery visits and art workshops that serve as compensation, if you skip a class. I heard that they're quite laid back when it comes to attendance in Creative Writing. Provided there's prior notice, occasional absences are okay.
A: You take Art, Biology and Writing in your regular classes. Why would you want extra?
B: If I take Applied Arts, it will give me hands-on experience that I miss in regular classes because there's so much theory to cover. Extracurricular Biology is all about microscopes and test tubes. Again, the emphasis is on practice. Creative Writing is like an extension. The teacher said projects would bring us extra points towards the final grade. Not that I'd need them though.
A: I know Mr. Smith teaches Applied Arts. What about the others? Does Ms. Jansen still teach Biology?
B: Yes. Ms. Jansen's returned from her job-shadowing year in Finland, and Biology classes have become a lot more interesting actually. Mr. Smith's been on sick leave since last term, and Ms. Dupont, an Erasmus exchange teacher from Belgium, is standing in for him this year in Applied Arts. And you know Ms. Becker, my German teacher, she's teaching Creative Writing this year, believe it or not.
A: And are there any requirements for getting enrolled?
B: I'm practically already in Applied Arts because I've taken it before, but it's never been in great demand anyway. It's first come, first served for Biology, and there are five more spots left, so there's no rush to sign up, which is not the case with Creative Writing though. I'm on standby for admittance, so I can only hope for a spot if somebody backs out.
A: I see. So, good luck with your choice.
B: Thanks.
